Touch and go
For several million Indians, the future is anything but certain
While India is one of the world’s fastest growing economies, it is also a country where inequality is rampant.
The top 10% of India’s population holds 77% of the nation’s total wealth. In 2017, 73% of the wealth generated went to the richest 1% while 67 million of India’s poorest only saw a 1% increase in their wealth.
According to the WEF’s Global Social Mobility Report 2020, it will take an Indian born to a low income family, seven generations to even approach the country’s mean income.
While grim, this is also a scenario that we have been tackling at the grassroots, doing our bit to ameliorate and ease the way for the needy within our neighbourhoods and communities.
